Man Allegedly Leaves Child In Car That Got Towed For Illegal Parking

DENVER (CBS4) - A man has a lot of questions to answer after leaving his 1-year-old in a car long enough in an illegal parking spot that it got towed.

Denver police say last weekend he parked in 1400 block of Corona Street in a space that's not allowed during nighttime hours. After 40 minutes the car was towed.

Police say Benton called them to report his 1-year-old son was sleeping in the car.

Police checked with tow companies and were able to track the car and child down.

Benton was given a "wrongs to minor" ticket and police say it doesn't matter how short of a time it is -- you should never leave a child alone in a car.

"It doesn't matter if it's 10 minutes. A car can be gone in 60 seconds. It was long enough for his car to be taken. So it doesn't matter how long it happens," Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. "It's a situation where a child was in danger."

That child is now in the custody of a family friend.
