Mikaela Shiffrin's Family Elated Over Gold Medal Win

DENVER (CBS4) - Mikaela Shiffrin is following in the footsteps of Missy Franklin -- Colorado girl turned Olympic sensation.

On Wednesday Olympic gold medalist Shiffrin, 18, was selling magazines by making the cover of Sports Illustrated. On Thursday she was featured on the Wheaties cereal box. Imagine how her family in Colorado feels?

"When they told us that she is the youngest Olympic slalom winner in history, that was like, 'We didn't even know that was … really?' " Mikaela's father Dr. Jeff Shiffrin said.

"It was a rollercoaster of emotions, a phenomenal feeling, something that you just can't describe unless you get to experience it yourself," Mikaela's brother Taylor Shiffrin said. "I wish I could describe it but it's just complete elation, that's the closest I could come to."

Taylor skis for the University of Colorado and her father is an anesthesiologist at University Hospital's Lone Tree center.

"She is providing those special magical take your breath away moments. She is just kind of clicking them off, giving me lots of joy in life stuff," her father said.

But Mikaela has never beaten her brother.

"This is true. Fortunately she has not beaten me just yet, but I don't think I'm going to be racing against her anytime soon," Taylor said.
