$100,000 Worth Of Stolen Ammo Probably Headed For Black Market

ARVADA, Colo. (CBS4) – Police hope the public can help in the investigation after more than $100,000 worth of ammunition was stolen from an Arvada business.

According to police, an entire trailer which was loaded with the ammo was taken to another location where a thief or thieves were able to cut through metal brackets and remove the locks and get away with everything inside.

Investigators are asking for the public's help finding a Chevy Tahoe connected to the crime.

"It's got some distinct black marks on it. If they see it or think they've seen it give us a call," Jill McGranahan with the Arvada Police Department said. "There's a black market for this stuff and criminals will go for any opportunity for a quick buck."

The shop owner says the trailer was packed full of gun accessories and ammunition in preparation for an upcoming gun show. Investigators say it was parked back behind the business.

"They took the trailer and transported it to another location and then loaded up another U-Haul and took it out of there," McGranahan said.

According to the shop owner, that switch happened just a few miles away at a Shell gas station. That's where the Tahoe was caught on camera. Investigators say the camera angles make it tough to read the plate but they're hoping the photo will prompt new leads.

"Hopefully we'll find the guys who did this and hopefully get some of that ammunition of the street."

The shop owner says they did not get away with any guns, just the ammo and accessories.

Anyone who recognizes the Tahoe or has any information about the crime is asked to call police immediately.
