Child Tanning Bed Ban Narrowly Clears House

DENVER (AP) - A ban on commercial tanning bed use by children has narrowly cleared the Colorado House.

The House voted 33-31 to prohibit anyone under 18 from using a tanning salon.

Four Democrats including House Speaker Mark Ferrandino voted against the tanning bill. It faces a questionable future in the Senate, where Democrats have just a one-seat majority. Republicans oppose the bill because they say older teens should be able to visit tan salons with parental permission.

At least 33 states and Washington, D.C., have some limits on childhood tanning bed use, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

But only five states - California, Illinois, Nevada, Texas and Vermont - prohibit all commercial tanning bed use by minors.
