2 People Survive 120 Foot Drop Off Vail Pass

VAIL, Colo. (CBS4)- Along Vail Pass a car went off the highway and plunged 120 feet before slamming into the ground. Both people inside the vehicle survived.

The driver lost control and went through a guardrail on Tuesday afternoon.

Crews rappelled down to rescue them.

Both people suffered serious injuries.

The driver broke her back in three places and will likely be hospitalized for months.

The fire chief said the deep snow was tough to work in but likely cushioned the car's landing.

Westbound lanes of Interstate 70 were closed during the rescue.
