Police Looking For Suspects In String Of Bike Thefts

DENVER (CBS4) – Investigators are looking for suspects who are responsible for a string of bike burglaries in Denver.

Surveillance video caught the alleged thieves in the act.

Police said that in the past four weeks the thieves have stolen more than 40 bikes from several apartments.

That includes Leah Thompson's building on Lincoln Street.

"I'm now keeping the bike in the entrance to my own condo unit. I no longer keep it locked up in the racks provided for us in the garage," said Thompson.

Police say the men enter the buildings behind unsuspecting residents.

"They'll just sneak in behind them or they'll catch the door before the people realize it and go ahead and go on in," said Denver Police spokesman Sonny Jackson.

From there the suspects go to the garage or bike storage area, clip the locks and then ride the bikes out of the building.

Michael Schmidt said that after several bikes were stolen from her apartment on Lawrence Street her manager warned her against letting strangers in the building.

"We received a letter from 2020 Lawrence saying, don't do that for anybody," said Schmidt.

Thompson said that she and her fellow residents will rest easier when the culprits are caught.

"Yeah I think it's really scary. I think this area has come a long way but unfortunately incidents like these can always happen anywhere," said Thompson.

A $2,000 reward is being offered for help in catching the bandits.

Police are asking anyone with information to please contact them.
