GOP Tries To Repeal Colorado's New Gun Control Laws

DENVER (AP) - Republicans making a case to repeal Colorado gun background checks on private and online sales say the new requirements burden law-abiding citizens.

But Democrats who passed the law last year point to the 104 people with criminal records who have been prevented from obtaining firearms during private transactions since the new requirement took effect July 1.

The bill in a Senate committee Monday was being heard at the Capitol's largest hearing room, and it was packed. But the numbers did not equal the large crowds of last year when gun rights advocates drove their honking cars around the Capitol in protest.

Pueblo Republican Sen. George Rivera is sponsoring the bill to repeal the new background checks. He replaced one of two Democratic senators who were recalled because of new gun laws.
