Boyfriend: Highlands Ranch Suspect Suffered From Mental Illness

LITTLETON, Colo. (CBS4) – The boyfriend of a fatal shooting victim in Highlands Ranch told CBS4 that the shooter, the victim's son, suffered from a mental illness.

Brian McCoy is the boyfriend of Tatiana Klamo, the mother whose son allegedly shot her to death before killing himself on Friday.

"It's a lesson that they don't have to lose their whole family over stupid stuff," said McCoy.

According to McCoy, Tatiana thought she was helping her son, 15-year-old Robert Klamo, make progress to fight his battle with schizophrenia.

"That's the worst part. She went home and walked right into a storm," said McCoy.

He said in Littleton on Sunday that on Friday night his girlfriend and business partner, 46-year-old Tatiana, got into an argument with her son Robert because she wanted him to go back on his medication for paranoid schizophrenia.

"I just wanted her to call police and have him picked up and not deal with it herself. She really wanted to go home and felt like she could talk him down, and then take him to the hospital herself, and it just didn't happen," said McCoy.

McCoy said that Robert allegedly shot his mother multiple times, killing her and then turned the gun on himself.

He said that Robert also went after his sisters but both were able to escape.

One of them broke her back jumping out of the family's second story window.

"I was only able to do so much. Her daughter is in the hospital now, and she can't stop crying. She's frustrated her brother did this, and sad for her mother," said McCoy.

McCoy wishes he hadn't let Tatiana go home that night.

"We all lost the most incredible person I ever met," said McCoy.

He said that he has no idea how Robert got his hands on a gun.

That detail is still under investigation.
