Colorado Group Demands Unemployment Benefits Extension

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - Some Coloradans are demanding Congress extend long-term unemployment benefits.

On Tuesday a grassroots group gathered at Aurora City Hall. They are specifically asking the Speaker of the House to allow a vote on extending the benefits.

Also on Tuesday a bill to restore those benefits cleared a major hurdle in the Senate, but Republicans want changes to the bill before a final vote.

"There's absolutely no excuse to pass unemployment insurance legislation without also finding ways to create good, stable high paying jobs, also trying to find the way to pay for it," said Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky.

House Speaker John Boehner has already said if extending unemployment insurance isn't paid for with cuts elsewhere the bill will be dead on arrival in the House.
