Pieres Brothers Competing In Aspen Polo Tourney
ASPEN, Colo. (AP) — The world's top polo players are competing in Aspen, including Ralph Lauren model Nacho Figueras and Facundo and Gonzalito Pieres of Argentina.
Three top-ranked Americans — Nic Roldan, Brandon Phillips and Juan Bollini — are also competing in the Piaget World Snow Polo Championship on Thursday and Friday.
The tournament is happening at a city park over the objection of Mayor Steve Skadron, who says it's a niche event that's not significant enough to take place in a public space.
During a meeting earlier this month, The Aspen Times reported that Skadron was also concerned about the death of a horse at the event in 2011 and the environmental impact of having to make snow if there wasn't enough real snow. This year's organizers are different from those in 2011.
