Complete Home Makeover A Surprise To Home Owner

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4)- An 89-year-old woman is in for a big surprise. Her home in Aurora is being renovated and she has no idea.

The renovations are being done completely free of charge thanks to more than a dozen contractors and businesses pitching in to make it happen.

The home owner, Vivian Gallegos, has been away from her home for a week thanks to some clever conspiring by her grandchildren. The big reveal and surprise are set for Thursday.

Everything was put into place when Gallegos cried about the condition of her carpet. But upon closer inspection it became clear that the home needed a lot more than carpet.

"Somebody gets in the tub or sits on the toilet, they could go through the floor," said one contractor.

When asked how they were keeping it a secret from their grandmother, her granddaughter Stacy replied, "Basically we kidnapped her and shuffled her off to Silverthorne."

Her bond with her grandmother is extra special. Stacy was a little girl when her mom was murdered. Grandma Vivian took over and raised Stacy and her brother and sister.

"My grandma? Everything. I wouldn't be who I am today without her, definitely," said Stacy.

Up to $30,000 worth of work is being done free of charge thanks to radio announcer Willy B of KBPI. He tweeted a question to listeners asking, "What can I do for you?"

"Her response was to have her grandmother's carpet cleaned and it was a very unselfish answer to a question that was designed to be selfish," said Wilie B.

"She was crying in my lap like a child would about the state of her house and how it's rundown and she can't do anything about it," said Stacy.

Fifteen contractors answered the call for help and have been working on her home nonstop since last week. Some of the things they've completed are new tiles, new flooring and a fresh coat of paint in most rooms.

Although Stacy is excited about the final reveal, she's a little nervous about her grandmother's reaction.

"There is, like, a 95 percent chance that she's going to scream at me first," said Stacy.
