Mom Of Boy Who Drowned In Thornton Gets Probation

BRIGHTON, Colo. (AP) — The mother of a 4-year-old boy who drowned in a Thornton swimming pool will be on probation for five years under intensive supervision.

Kayla Erin Barnett of Lafayette was sentenced in Brighton on Tuesday.

She was originally charged with child abuse resulting in death after the drowning but she pleaded guilty to the lesser charge in October.

Deputy District Attorney Christa Landis says Izaiah Lopez drowned after Barnett left the pool area to smoke on June 9. She thinks Barnett's sentence is appropriate, adding that the worst punishment is the loss of her son.
