FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) – Seventeen big box stores from Target to Best Buy in Fort Collins started their Black Friday sales early.

Fifteen percent of all sales happen Black Friday weekend. The period between Black Friday and Christmas this year will be the shortest in more than a decade.

The late Thanksgiving holiday shortened the season six days, pushing retailers into opening their Black Friday sales sooner and encouraging shoppers to start.

"Yeah I think it's much better, that way a lot of people don't have to rush to the stores and drive dangerously," said shopper Kiran Kambly.

Not everyone is happy with the early start.

"I don't like it. I think it takes away from our family time," said shopper Laura Wolff, "I think a lot of people forget what Christmas is really about."

Despite the shortened season, retail experts are confident the rebounding economy will make up for lost time.
