ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - The Cherry Creek School District has fired a school bus driver who is accused of driving drunk with students on board.

Rudolfo Luna was driving six students from Liberty Middle School to a Village Inn for a field trip. There a witness reported they saw Luna dump empty vodka bottles out of the bus. When police caught up with him he said that he had not been drinking.

"He did consent to voluntary roadside maneuvers, to which he did not perform satisfactorily. He admitted at that point later on that he had consumed some cold medicine as well as two shots of alcohol," said Cpt. Larry Etheridge from the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office.

Luna has now been charged with driving under the influence and child abuse.

Investigators are waiting for test results to come back that will show Luna's blood alcohol level.

Luna could not be reached for comment.

"I just think that's awful. I'm glad that everyone's safe and everything's okay, but something needs to happen. That's not okay," said Luna's neighbor Jessica Marcely.

The Cherry Creek School District confirms that Luna was hired in July and had no criminal history or problems until this event.

"It is a violation of school policy, absolutely. It is shocking and disturbing. It is an anomaly," said spokeswoman Tustin Amole.
