Some DPS Students Medical Records In Hands Of Thief

DENVER (CBS4)- A thief stole a suitcase from a school nurse which also contained some valuable information about some Denver Public School students.

On a thumb drive that was inside the nurse's briefcase was information about the students' medical history.

The briefcase was stolen out of her car while it was parked in a parking lot in Morrison.

DPS sent home letters to some 100 DPS parents informing them that items stolen from the employee's vehicle included confidential information about those children.

"I read the first part of it and told my wife, you need to read this... look what happened," said parent Norman Martinez.

"We're worried that maybe someone is going to use our kid's information on there," said parent Katherine Martinez.

DPS confirms that on Oct. 5 a school nurse had a briefcase stolen from her car in Morrison.

Inside was a thumb drive that contained confidential health information for students from Eagleton, Castro and Munroe Schools. That information included medications, health-related letters and medical histories.

"What else to they have? Do they know where our kids live?" said Katherine.

The school district said that no addresses or social security numbers were on that thumb drive. They also said that the nurse as part of her role at the schools has permission to access that data.

However, DPS will review how student records are handled as a result of that theft.
