BLM Colorado Director Hankins To Retire Sept. 30

DENVER (AP) - Bureau of Land Management Colorado office director Helen Hankins will retire at the end of the month.

The BLM announced Hankins' retirement Tuesday. Associate state director John Mehlhoff will serve as acting state director until a permanent replacement is found.

A University of New Mexico geology graduate, Hankins began her BLM career as a clerk-typist in Albuquerque in 1970. She working her way up into positions of responsibility and has had assignments in Alaska, Nevada, and Arizona, as well as Washington, D.C. She took leadership of the Colorado office in 2010.

Colorado has 8.3 million acres of BLM public lands and 27 million acres of mineral estate.
