Retired Denver Officer Sentenced For Shooting

DENVER (AP) — A retired Denver police officer has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting at Northglenn officers responding to his home on a suicide call.

Alan McEwen was sentenced Thursday in Adams County District Court on charges of first-degree assault on a police officer. He had pleaded guilty and apologized to officers during his sentencing.

Authorities say McEwen shot at officers when they responded to his Northglenn residence after he called 911 on October 2012. Authorities say McEwen refused orders to drop his firearm when he exited his home and advanced on them. Police shot him four times.

McEwen's shots hit a police car, a tree, and the ground near the officers.
