Judge Overturns Englewood Sex Offender Law
DENVER (AP) — A federal judge has overturned an Englewood ordinance that restricts where convicted sex offenders can live.
Ina a ruling Wednesday, U.S. District Judge R. Brooke Jackson said the ordinance leaves few places for offenders to live and pushes them into neighboring cities.
The ordinance barred them from living within 2,000 feet of any school, park or playground, or 1,000 feet of any licensed day care center, recreation center or swimming pool.
The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit challenging the law on behalf of a man who bought a house in Englewood in 2012 and later found out he couldn't live there.
The ACLU says the ruling could impact five other Colorado cities with similar laws — Greenwood Village, Castle Rock, Lone Tree, Commerce City and Greeley.
