Hail Damages Some Northern Colorado Crop Fields

GREELEY, Colo. (AP) - Some northern Colorado farmers say their fields sustained substantial hail damage over the weekend.

Mike Hungenberg with Hungenberg Produce north of Greeley tells the Greeley Tribune that one cabbage field that was about ready for harvest was "mowed to the ground." He estimates the damage to that field alone was about $450,000 to $500,000.

Petrocco Farms owner Dave Petrocco says the hail destroyed 80 percent of the squash, green beans, peppers, lettuce and other crops at his four farms in the Greeley area. Hungenberg says his carrot crop can recover.

Farmers say crops that won't be harvested until closer to fall also could recover.

However Troy Seaworth tells the Coloradoan he expects a total loss on 110 acres of corn and losses of nearly 65 acres of wheat near Wellington.
