West Fork Complex Fire Now 2 Percent Contained
DEL NORTE, Colo. (AP) — Colorado highway officials have reopened U.S. 160 over Wolf Creek Pass but say they could close it again if the West Fork Complex Fire threatens the highway.
The pass, which crosses the Continental Divide northeast of Pagosa Springs, was opened Saturday morning.
Firefighters battling the Papoose Fire, one of three in the West Fork Complex, were defending structures along Highway 149, which connects Creede with South Fork. They also focused on structure protection east of that fire.
Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration installed a portable tower at the Durango Airport to handle the volume of aircraft flying in the area in support of the fires.
The lightning-caused fire was reported June 5 and has burned more than 140 square miles. It is 2 percent contained.
