Bear Euthanized After Deaths Of 40 Chickens Near Paonia

GUNNISON, Colo. (AP) - Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials say they have euthanized a bear that killed about 40 chickens near Paonia.

Wildlife officers said Monday that owners of small livestock should secure their animals in sturdy enclosures at night, dusk and dawn to protect them from bears but also mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes and raccoons.

The warning comes as more residents, including in cities, raise chickens.

Wildlife officials relocate bears that pose a nuisance to humans and euthanize bears that pose a threat.

Earlier this spring, the U.S. Forest Service ordered campers in the Aspen area and beyond to secure their food and trash so as not to attract attention from bears.
