Woman Scares Off Burglar By Firing Gun At Him

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) - A quick-thinking Colorado Springs woman who scared off a burglar has become a hero in her neighborhood.

Early on Sunday morning Diana Richter woke up to the sound of someone removing the screen from her bedroom window.

"It was a very beautiful night and I had my windows open," she said.

When she saw a man outside trying to enter her room she grabbed her 380 handgun and screamed "I don't know who you are but I'll shoot you."

After she saw the man's shoe coming into her window she then fired five shots.

"I took a deep breath and said 'God, give me strength,' " said Richter, who has four brothers in the military and grew up around guns.

The man then jumped from the window and hid behind a tree before sprinting down the street with her screen. One bullet struck the tree where the man had just been.

Richter said she has a message for the man: "Whoever you are, you're lucky you got away this time, but God has my back."

Richter's neighbor Bruce Roderick said she has become the talk of the town.

"I think she is blessed, and I think she should aim better," Richter said. "I think she's a hero in the neighborhood. If someone breaks into my house I would love to have her next door."

Richter said eventually she'd like to join the military. She said that despite her misses on Sunday, she is a very good shot.

She also feels that women "shouldn't be scared to stand up to anybody at any time."

Police are still looking for the intruder.

Since the crime Richter has installed a motion detector system outside her home.
