Suspicious Device Found In Aurora Home Deemed Safe

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4)- The suspicious device being investigated by the Arapahoe County Bomb Squad has been deemed safe. That device was found inside a briefcase in a vacant home Friday afternoon.

Police in Aurora were called about 2 p.m. to investigate a suspicious device in a vacant home in the 16100 block of E. Mercer Circle.

Contractors were in the home cleaning it out when they found a briefcase in the basement that appeared to have an explosive device inside.

The homes on both sides of the house were evacuated. A reverse 911 was placed to homes in the neighborhood to advise them of the investigation.

Students at Mission Viejo Elementary were advised not to walk home through that neighborhood. Officers patrolling that area to ensure no students came close to the home.

Officers were able to contact a previous resident of the home who explained the briefcase and items in it and that it was not an explosive device.

The Arapahoe Bomb Squad confirmed the device was not an explosive and a secondary sweep of the basement came up clean.
