Snow Clearing Crews Have Big Job On Colorado Mountain Passes

ESTES PARK, Colo. (CBS4) - Despite recent snowstorms in the high country, officials say they are on track to open Mount Evans and Trail Ridge roads for the busy Memorial Day Weekend.

Mount Evans Scenic Byway is the highest paved road in the nation and Trail Ridge Road is country's highest continuous paved road.

Officials with Rocky Mountain National Park shared the following photo of the conditions on May 1 on Trail Ridge, which winds through 48 miles of the park from the Estes Park side on the east to the western park entrance.

Park officials told CBS4 they are confident Trail Ridge will open on time.

Mount Evans Scenic Byway climbs to an elevation of 14,130 feet and is usually open until Labor Day.

The Colorado Department of Transportation is also using avalanche experts to help safely clear Independence Pass in time for Memorial Day.

There are concerns about snow slides, but CDOT is confident it can get the pass cleared in the next two weeks.

Independence Pass usually stays open through November but it has periodic closures during the fall.
