Officials: 911 Call To Report Waldo Canyon Fire Mishandled
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4)- The man who made the first 911 call to report what would become the Waldo Canyon Fire said he wishes he was never part of the story.
The El Paso County Sheriff said his department mishandled the call four hours before firefighters discovered the front line of what would become Colorado's most destructive wildfire.
Noel Boyce called 911 and told dispatchers where the fire was smoldering in June 2012.
That information was never passed along to firefighters who were struggling to find it's starting point.
Three days later that fire moved into residential neighborhoods and destroyed nearly 350 homes.
"When I made that call I was hoping to get some involvement. You think with that type of information you would have a little bit more involvement," said Boyce.
Boyce said he has pictures of where the fire started on his phone which he shared with police. Investigators are still trying to pinpoint the exact cause of the Waldo Canyon Fire.
