9,000+ Lose Power Near Fort Collins

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) - Snow is being blamed for a major power outage in Northern Colorado Wednesday morning.

About 9,000 people lost power at time.

The early number included 6,000 customers in the Poudre Valley REA area north of Fort Collins and about 3,000 more in areas served by Xcel Energy. At 3 p.m. that number was reduced to approximately 2,000 to 3,000 from Xcel and 1,763 from Poudre Valley.

About 38,000 customers in Greeley were shortly without power on Wednesday morning. Xcel Energy said that outage was because of a "system disturbance" and power was quickly restored to those customers.

Poudre Valley REA said several downed power lines were because of heavy snow weighing down on branches, causing them to break and take power lines with them.
