Inmate Dies In Canon City, Details Not Released

CANON CITY, Colo. (AP) — The Colorado Department of Corrections is confirming the death of an inmate at the Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility in Canon City.

The department said Thursday that 23-year-old Matthew Melina died Wednesday afternoon. The department wasn't releasing details.

The department's Office of Inspector General is investigating.

Melina had been sentenced to five years in prison for robbery of an at-risk person in Jefferson County. He was paroled Sept. 11 but returned to prison Nov. 6 after a parole violation. Online records show he was due for a parole hearing in May.
