Body Recovered From Black Canyon Of Gunnison Park

GUNNISON, Colo. (AP) — Rangers and search and rescue team members have recovered the body found earlier this week in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.

Officials didn't immediately identify the body Friday but said it appears the person sustained a significant fall.

Rangers found the body Tuesday about 1,000 feet below the canyon's South Rim. At the time, they were looking for an overdue backpacker whose backcountry permit indicated a departure from the park Saturday but whose car was still at the trailhead Sunday. Blizzard conditions and rock fall hazards kept teams from recovering the body earlier.

Park officials described the overdue backpacker as a middle-aged man from out of state who was traveling alone.
