4-Year-Old Lands On Feet After Falling From 3rd Story Window

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - An Aurora 4-year-old is alive after falling out of a third-story apartment window and amazingly landing on his feet.

Dylan's mother, Jessica Hayes, has a warning for parents with young children.

"I fall ... really, really far," Dylan told CBS4's Evrod Cassimy.

"I was terrified," Jessica said. "I didn't know what I was going to see when I got down to the ground floor."

Jessica was shampooing her carpets when the fall happened. She had moved her couch to the wall when Dylan climbed on it to talk through the window to his downstairs neighbors.

"I heard a crash, and the next thing I know I just saw a blur," neighbor Pat Roush said.

"My mom was cleaning our fridge out, and all of a sudden I hear her screaming, 'Dylan just went out the window!' " Jessica said.

Dylan fell out of the third story window, did two somersaults in the air, and landed on the rocks below on his feet. Within seconds Jessica ran down the stairs to Dylan's side.

"I didn't know what I was going to go down to, like a child who was just lying there, or a child with blood coming out of him," Jessica said.

The screen he broke through suffered more damage than he did. Dylan was hospitalized for just 20 hours. He wore a neck brace as a precaution but was released with barely a scratch.

"I feel beyond lucky. There must have been something watching over Dylan that day," Jessica said.

"There had to have been angels watching over him," Dylan's grandmother Kelli Hayes said.

"It's gotten easier since it happened two weeks ago to not blame myself," Jessica said. "I wish the danger would have crossed my mind, which it didn't."

Jessica hopes other parents hear her story and always remember to be mindful of dangers to young children, even for a split second. She has since moved out of the apartment complex and is living with a relative. She is looking for a new place on the first floor.
