Denver Police Search For Hilltop, Crestmoor Thieves

DENVER (CBS4)- Police in Denver are searching for thieves targeting vehicles and homes in two neighborhoods.

There have been several break ins in Hilltop and Crestmoor in an area bordered by 6th Avenue and Alameda and Monaco and Colorado.

Police confirm the number of crimes in the area has increased since last year. Residents are worried because they believe a group is specifically targeting the neighborhood.

Taylor is the Neighborhood Watch Captain in Hilltop. She and her family have lived in the neighborhood for 10 years.

She said recently she has seen cars on blocks, cars with their windows smashed out and other destruction.

"There is a huge gap in the window and obviously glass all over the place. It's surprising," said one resident.

What some said is most surprising is not the iPods stolen from inside the vehicle but all that's left behind. Some recent car thieves have left behind cash, stereos and other valuables.

Residents said a dog walker was also held up at gunpoint in a nearby park. Some neighbors said with the increase in crime they will take a more active role in their safety and watching out for one another.
