Police: Mother Shot 3, Killed 2 Children Before Taking Own Life

DENVER (CBS4)- Police in Denver have confirmed that a mother shot her three children, killing two of them, before turning the gun on herself in an early morning shooting on Wednesday.

Isabel Perez, 2, survived the shooting. She remained in critical condition at Denver Health Medical Center on Thursday.

The family asked for prayers when they spoke on Thursday afternoon.

"I want to ask for a prayer to help guide us through the hard times we are going through," said cousin Edgar Munoz.

Police confirmed Mayra Nunez, 23, killed her children, Nevaeh, 4, Eric, 1, and attempted to do the same with Isabel, 2, before turning the gun on herself. Nevaeh died of multiple gunshot wounds and Eric died of a single gunshot wound.

Relatives have said Mayra quarreled Tuesday night with her husband, who left their home to cool off and found the bodies when he returned early Wednesday.

"The father left for the evening and returned home. He is the one that made that phone call to us," said Denver Police Cmdr. Ron Saunier.

Police won't confirm the motive or if a suicide note was left.

Tony Nunez said he has no idea what drove his sister to do such a terrible thing.

"Whatever drove her to this it's going to be in God's hands. He will be the judge of her and from now on we need to focus prayer on our little niece," said Nunez.

A fund has been set up at Wells Fargo for Isabel Perez, account # 6257187770, routing # 121000248.

The house where the bodies were found is in an industrial area near the National Western Stock Show complex.
