DENVER (CBS4) – What does a favorite musical “Jekyll and Hyde,” coming to Denver in a pre-Broadway run, have in common with the Grammy Awards? How about a leading lady in Grammy nominee Deborah Cox?

CBS4 Critic at Large Greg Moody talked with Cox about the reinvention of “Jekyll and Hyde” and her time in the Grammy spotlight.

Cox is known for her pop, rock and soul styles. She can sing just about anything, and do it with an emotional edge. She’s won all kinds of awards for her work and Grammy nominations. She brings that energy, that style and that edge to the rebirth of “Jekyll and Hyde.”

Cox is part of a show that has been stripped down to its emotional essence and given a rock sensibility that works beautifully with Grammy nominee Frank Wildhorn’s music.

“Frank Wildhorn is a pop song writer, but he also has the flexibility of writing Broadway style tunes as well,” Cox said. “I think with this show in particular; songs like ‘A New Life’ and ‘Someone Like You,’ ‘Sympathy Tenderness,’ are all like melody driven, great, beautifully written, beautifully crafted songs that transcend musical theater.”

It’s the tie to the Grammys that Cox knows well and remembers fondly for the nominations that she received for her album “Destination Moon.”

“It’s really, really gratifying and so amazing when you get that kind of recognition because it makes all the hard work just so much sweeter,” Cox said. “Honestly, just to be nominated, and that’s not a cliché at all, I truly mean that, just to be recognized is amazing.”

With the power she brings to the role of Lucy, and Wildhorn’s music, she may be at the Grammys again, as well as the Tonys, for this re-imagined — revised — and reenergized version of “Jekyll and Hyde.”

“Jekyll and Hyde,” starring Cox and Constantine Maroulis, opens Jan. 29 at the Buell Theater. Get the Moody deal at $50 per ticket in price Level 2 for the shows on Jan. 29, 30 and 31. Use the promo code “Moody” online, on the phone or in person and save money. Call (303) 893-4100 or visit
