Durango Woman Convicted Of Lying In Murder Case
DURANGO, Colo. (AP) — A Durango woman has been convicted of lying about her husband's murder in an effort to protect her brother, who was later convicted of the crime.
The Durango Herald reports that 42-year-old Suzanne Garcia was convicted on 10 counts including perjury and tampering with a witness. She faces probation to six years in prison on each count.
Prosecutors said Garcia intentionally misled investigators and lied to a grand jury that was investigating the 2010 shooting death of her husband, Ted Garcia. Prosecutors said Garcia was trying to protect her brother, Joseph Dernoga, who was charged with and later convicted of the crime.
Garcia was also convicted of coaching her daughter, who was 14 at the time, to lie before the grand jury.
