Man Convicted In Body Outside Arapahoe Jail Case

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) — A man who drove to the Arapahoe County Jail with a body in the trunk of his car has been convicted by a jury of first-degree murder.

Forty-two-year-old Robert Leroy Johnson faces life in prison in the October 2010 death of Thomas Francis Datema. District Attorney spokeswoman Casimir Spencer the jury deliberated two hours before returning a guilty verdict Wednesday.

Johnson told police that he shot Datema after the man harassed him for sex. Prosecutors say Johnson told police that he lured the man to a remote county road and shot him in the head.

Johnson then caused a bomb scare when he arrived at the jail to turn himself in with Datema's body in the trunk.

Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 3.
