Cold Weather Doesn't Keep Holiday Shoppers Away From Downtown

DENVER (CBS4) - The cold weather didn't stop people from making Denver a destination for their holiday shopping and entertainment.

The Southwest Rink At Skyline Park  in downtown Denver is one of the many attractions in the city of Denver this holiday season. CBS4 found many people out and about taking in what Denver has to offer.

"We've been coming down here every year for I think about eight years now to do 'The Nutcracker,' " one person said.

"Last night we stayed at the Magnolia Hotel and we went out to dinner and now we're Christmas shopping," another said.

From shopping to ice skating, festive lights and even Christmas plays, Denver has a lot going on during the holidays. Jayne Buck with Visit Denver believes the Mile High City attracts a lot of tourists this time of year.

"Every time we bring in an overnight visitor they're spending around $100 a day. That's really important to our economy and we don't pay those taxes," Buck said.

It's not all about spending money. Visit Denver is promoting 50 fun and free things to do around the city during the Christmas season.

Right across the street from the ice skating rink is the Christkindle Market where visitors can see the German traditions. There are Santa sightings all around town and the lights at the City and County Building and Union Station are quite festive.

Area hotels are even offering a special $52.80 rate for those looking to paint the town and enjoy the sights and sounds of the city.
