Georgetown Brings In Snow Guns To Get A White Christmas

GEORGETOWN, Colo. (CBS4) - One mountain town is showing just how badly the high country could use a fresh blanket of snow.

Georgetown brought in snow guns to help turn its downtown into more of a winter wonderland, hoping to reel in tourists, but it didn't quite work out as planned.

The town is in the middle of winter's biggest event -- the 52nd annual Christmas Market, which wraps up on Sunday. So Georgetown Mayor Kerry Ann McHugh decided to bring out the snow guns and add a winter dusting of charm to the picturesque town.

"This is just a little bit of a gift for our tourists in our town to make it very special," McHugh said.

The snow-making effort did, however, raise some eyebrows.

"It's fake. Georgetown is not fake," a resident said. "That's not going to bring people to Georgetown."

But Mother Nature had the last laugh.

"It's still too warm," McHugh said.

The snow guns blasted slush which turned to water before it hit the ground.

"We're going to check temperatures out later, or go to Plan C, which is return to Plan A, which is wait for Mother Nature," McHugh said.
