Friends Say Teen Shooting Victim Was A New Father

LITTLETON, Colo. (CBS4) - Police have released few details about a deadly shooting in Littleton Friday night.

The shooting that left a teenager dead and another hospitalized happened just after 11 p.m. in the 5400 block of South Fox Street near Broadway and Belleview.

A 17-year-old was rushed to Swedish Hospital. He remained there Sunday morning. His condition is unknown. An 18-year-old, who friends identified as Devon Flores, was found dead in the street.

Detectives interviewed witnesses from a nearby party and processed the crime scene overnight and Saturday morning. Neighbors in the area said they could hear the commotion from inside their homes.

"The dogs started barking. About that time we heard about five or six rounds … bang, bang, bang, bang, bang … real fast," neighbor Linda Carter Martinez said. "I got up and I grabbed my cellphone and called 911."

Martinez said there was a bunch of yelling at the end of the street.

"One kid was yelling, 'That's my brother, that's my brother,' " Martinez said.

A stray bullet went through a window in Martinez's house.

"The police officers asked if that whole had been in that window, and I go, 'What window?' " Martinez said. "Sure enough there's a big old bullet hole."

Officers haven't been able to find the bullet.

Martinez said there were two parties in her neighborhood within a few houses from each other involving teens and young adults. The Schmidt family told CBS4 they were hosting a party for a 15-year-old girl and the partly turned hostile.

"People invited people and it started getting too big," Keevin Schmidt said. "There was arguing and I told everyone, 'I'm not having this.' "

Neighbors said there have been fights on that particular block recently. One neighbor was threatened at gunpoint for trying to break up a fight. Residents have already asked police for more patrols.

Much of the surrounding area had to be blocked off to traffic while detectives gathered evidence. They could be seen examining a gun that might have been used in the shooting, but police are releasing much information.

Police have not said if they are searching for a suspect or if the victims knew each other.

The identities of the teens have not officially been released but friends of Flores told CBS4 he was a new father.

"Devon didn't deserve this and he needs his justice. So whoever did this needs to turn themselves in," friend Isabel Denning said. "Whoever was even there needs to turn themselves in and respect Devon's family."
