Deadly Distracted Driving Case Moved To County Court

BRIGHTON, Colo. (CBS4) - A driver will face charges in county court rather than traffic court after a deadly crash.

That decision was made in an Adams County courtroom on Thursday morning.

Investigators say Michael Grennan plowed his car into three men walking along the street in Thornton, killing two of them. He's charged with careless driving resulting in death and careless driving resulting in injury.

Police say he was using his cellphone while driving but his wife told CBS4 after the incident that her husband was not on his phone at the time.

The accident happened along east 168th Avenue in Thornton on March 31. Witnesses say Grennan veered off the road and crashed into Stephen Dabney and brothers Seth and Jarren Lewis. Jarren was hurt but survived.

The DA's office so far hasn't said whether Grennan was texting at the time of the crash.

The victims' families have set up memorial funds for their loved ones. Dabney was a father of six.

To donate, go to any Wells Fargo bank and ask for the Dabney and Lewis Family Memorial Funds.
