Western Slope Man, 82, Dies From West Nile Virus

DELTA, Colo. (AP) - An 82-year-old Western Slope man has died from the West Nile virus, bringing the statewide death toll from the mosquito-borne virus to three.

The Daily Sentinel reports the man died Sept. 19 at a nursing home in Delta County. County coroner Kevin Lucy says the man had been in and out of hospitals in the weeks before his death because of West Nile-related complications.

The Western Slope counties of Delta, Montrose and Mesa account for 49 of the state's 92 West Nile cases this year through Monday, according to the state health department.

The state's two other reported West Nile deaths this year occurred in Montrose County.
