Honeymoon Ends In Tragedy For Colorado Couple In New Zealand
WAITOMO, New Zealand (CBS4) - A honeymoon ended in tragedy for a Colorado couple vacationing in New Zealand.
Kallen Stithem, 31, died after a car crash and his wife Kirsten Steinke, 28, had to be flown to the hospital.
Stithem was a Colorado State University graduate and his wife works for the University of Colorado Foundation.
The road where the deadly accident happened is known as very dangerous, especially for international drivers.
"Every day I go back from work, you sort of take your life in your hands," resident Ross O'Halloran said. "You know I put my foot down and just go for it and hope you get out."
"A lot of people here are overseas drivers and come in here and are heading left to right," resident Eric Tait said.
Road officials have made changes to the intersection but the deadly crashes continue. There is discussion of widening the intersection even more.
