2 Lakewood Children Rescued From Drainage Pipe

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4) - Two Lakewood children are safe after getting stuck in a drainage pipe.

The incident happened in the Soltera neighborhood around 1:30 p.m. on Friday.

Two 12-year-olds got into the drainage system about six blocks away from where they ended up. They called for help from a cellphone when they couldn't find their way out.

Crews were able to track the teens by "pinging" the phone and lifted a grate to rescue them.

"It's a pretty good message for all kids. It's real intriguing to see those drains and want to explore them and search through them, but it's probably a real bad idea, especially if they have water in them or potentially have water in them," Gary Armstrong with West Metro Fire said. "If you don't have a cellphone or get lost it could be real tough to find somebody."

The boys weren't hurt and are back home with their families.
