Diabetics Can Now Test Blood Sugar With iPhone Attachment

DENVER (CBS4) - The Tour de Cure is this Saturday and some of the participants will be using cutting-edge technology to test their blood sugar during the cycling event.

Diabetics can now test their blood sugar with a handy iPhone attachment. They still have to prick their finger, and then just slide the test strip into the attachment.

Having the technology accessible on an iPhone may actually get more people testing.

"I know a lot of people with diabetes who left home without their meter and may or may not go home and get it," Andrea Velasco with Sanofi Healthcare said. "I don't know anyone who would leave home without their iPhone and not go home and get it."

The data from the glucose test is then analyzed instantaneously on a special app right on the phone. They can look for trends in blood sugar and send the information right to the doctor with just a couple of clicks.

Some of the top fundraisers for the Tour de Cure won free iPhone glucose meters. There is still time to sign up for the event. It's Saturday, Aug. 18 at the Bolder County Fairgrounds in Longmont.
