Aurora Police Investigate Website Claiming To Raise Money For Shooting Victims

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4)- Police in Aurora area investigating a website that claims to raise money for shooting victims.

"It's disgusting to think that somebody would do that," said Aurora Police Officer Frank Fania.

Detectives believe someone who is taking advantage of a tragic situation is behind the website.

"Basically they set up a website to get the public to donate money allegedly for these victims," said Fania.

Fania said there was no intent to distribute the money collected, "This is simply somebody trying to take advantage of this horrible tragedy and profit from it themselves."

Although no one has been arrested, Fania said the police are building their case.

"These are predators and anyone who tries to victimize the victims for their own gain or take advantage of this horrible situation, we're going to do everything in our power to prosecute him," said Fania.

Police in Aurora are working with the Arapahoe County District Attorney's Office to decide which charges to file in the fraudulent website.

The website has been taken down. Police will not comment on how much money was raised.
