Woman's Dream Of A Veterans Memorial Beginning To Come True

BENNET, Colo. (CBS4) - This Memorial Day weekend a local woman wants to create a permanent way to honor Colorado veterans.

Kirsten Solberg's passion for honoring veterans comes after watching her father serve in Vietnam. She's one step closer to a goal she's had for years. She hopes people will help her complete a memorial for veterans within the Interstate 70 corridor.

"It was actually a dream of mine and I just didn't think it would happen and kept it quiet," Solberg said. "I finally gave up and decided to call the town of Bennett and see what it would take and here I am today."

It's a plan she's had in the works for over a year by keeping notes in a binder. Solberg said she's finally received a grant she'd been hoping for. At Monday's Memorial Day ceremony in Bennett she's looking for anyone and everyone who wants to get on board.

A sketch done by a local artist shows Solberg's idea for the memorial, which would feature a bald eagle surrounded by the names of local veterans.

"People tell me that it takes a lot of work, which they're right," she said. "We're starting with the marble and kind of building around that."

As she moves forward, Solberg hopes to have it completed within the next two years.
