Police Across Colorado Begin 'Heat Is On' Campaign

DENVER (CBS4) - Law enforcement across Colorado has begun their annual summertime crackdown on drunk drivers.

The "100 Days of Heat" campaign aims to cut into the number of drunk drivers on the road between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends.

Last year there were 67 alcohol-related traffic deaths during the summer. That's nearly double the year before.

In addition to extra patrols officers will set up DUI checkpoints to try to catch drunk drivers before an accident happens.

"If you have a couple drinks and you think you're okay to drive that car and you get behind the wheel and you have some level of impairment, you're in many ways more dangerous than someone who is falling over drunk who gets into a vehicle and passes out." Detective John White with Denver police said.

Both Aurora and Lakewood are the police departments planned to have DUI checkpoints over the weekend.
