CSU Student Misses Pool After Jumping From Apartment Rooftop

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) - Cellphone video shows a student at Colorado State University in Fort Collins jumping from the roof of an apartment complex. He was trying to land in the pool but he hit concrete and sustained serious injuries.

The CSU student, identified as Ian Smith, is now listed in fair condition at the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland after attempting to jump from the third floor of the apartment building into the six-foot deep pool below.

"There was so much commotion going on outside," witness Josh Abby said.

Students at the Ram's Village Apartments near the CSU campus, say sometime Saturday afternoon they saw someone climbing the roof of one of the buildings.

"This kid is just right on the top of the roof getting ready to back up," Abby said. "Everyone was yelling, 'Don't jump!' "

Video posted to YouTube shows him hitting the ground.

"The second he left, everyone was screaming," Abby said. "You could hear the smack on the cement and then you could hear the splash right into the water. It was almost simultaneous."

Smith doesn't live at the apartment complex.

"Our other friends come in and are like, 'Dude, Ian just broke both of his ankles,' " Smith's friend Laura Koch said.

Koch says Smith was at her apartment just a few minutes before the accident.

"I think he just got caught up in the moment and now it just sucks a lot," she said.

"Hopefully he's okay, but it's definitely something he should learn from," Abby said.

Smith broke his ankles as well as some vertebrae in his back, among other injuries. He underwent surgery.

The manager at the apartment complex said they had no comment regarding the accident.
