Yves Saint Laurent Fashion Stands The Test Of Time

DENVER (CBS4) - For the next few months Denver is the only place in North America to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime exhibit showcasing a fashion icon.

The Yves Saint Laurent exhibit is getting a lot of buzz. There are beautiful things and there is Yves Saint Laurent beauty. I love his creations because they have stood the test of time and you don't have to be a size six to look like a million bucks.

"You don't need to be a tall model girl to wear Saint Laurent," Domique Deroche said.

Deroche began working for Yves Saint Laurent back in 1966.

Thank goodness, considering the average woman in this country wears a size 12 to 14. It's refreshing to know a French designer from the 1960s and 1970s had a vision with curves.

"I worked with him for a long time and I'm not a model girl. I'm small and a bit plumpy, but I always wear Saint Laurent and he suits me and suits all the women," Deroche said.

Deroche says he would not have high regard for today's fashions.

"Putting funny clothes woman … or wanting to dress a woman too young like kids, you know, and that he didn't like at all," she said.

That's why the director of the Denver Art Museum, Christoph Heinrich, says Yves Saint Laurent was more than a designer -- he was an artist.

"When you go through the show actually, you think, 'Wow, I remember that. I had a safari jacket when I was a teenager.' It was certainly not Yves Saint Laurent, but it was one of these copies," Heinrich said. "It shows how influential this designer was."

You could wear anyone of his designs today and be a hit at the party.

Yves Saint Laurent: The Retrospective will be at the Denver Art Museum through July 8, and Denver is the only place in the United States you can see it.
