Children's Health In Colorado Getting Worse

DENVER (CBS4)- The overall health of children in Colorado is getting worse, not better. Kids in Colorado get a C- when it comes to their health.

The Colorado Health Foundation released its yearly report card on the health of Coloradans Thursday. The report outlines the factors that contribute to the overall health.

More than 18 percent of children across the state live below the poverty level. Nine percent have no form of health insurance. Fifteen percent of children are considered obese.

Health experts believe these figures can be changed with just a little work.

"Parents can make good choices. Obviously we know that fresh food, particularly fresh fruits and vegetables, are difficult to come by because they are expensive. But I think exercising with the kids, walking in the park, doing all the things that you want, that you can do to make a difference," said Colorado Health Department's Chief Medical Officer Dr. Chris Urbina.

The Colorado Health Foundation states there are areas that have improved across the state, including education. Schools have increased physical activity, improved lunch menus and even curbed junk food in vending machines.
