Alaska Troopers Say Colorado Skier Was Killed In Avalanche

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Alaska State Troopers say a 35-year-old skier from Colorado has died and another person has been injured in an avalanche northwest of Haines, in southeast Alaska.

Troopers said Telluride resident Robert Liberman died in the Tuesday morning snowslide.

The injured person was flown to Seattle for medical treatment. That person's name was not released pending notification of relatives.

Troopers say the slide occurred on Takhin Ridge, off the Haines Highway. They received a call that two skiers from a group of six were buried.

Another group of skiers rushed to help.

Troopers say the skiers were wearing avalanche beacons.

The Anchorage Daily News says the area is a popular loading zone for skiers boarding helicopters bound for the backcountry.
