Gunman Holds Hostages Inside Colorado Springs Doctor's Office

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) - A gunman who held hostages inside a doctor's office in Colorado Springs on Tuesday has died after being shot by police.

The hostage standoff began after police were called around 11:40 a.m. about a possible disturbance at Urological Associates located at 75 Printers Parkway on the east side of Colorado Springs.

The situation ended late Tuesday afternoon.

Police said a gunman went into the offices waiving a gun and demanded to see a woman who he was involved in a dispute with. All the people inside were allowed to leave except for two hostages. Three other people remained hiding in the building.

The two hostages were held by the gunman while the Colorado Springs Police Tactical Enforcement Unit with a hostage negotiator arrived.

The hostages were eventually released, but then an armed confrontation took place with the gunman. He was shot by an officer and taken to a nearby hospital where he died.

"He was at one side of the building and I was at the other. I could hear him as if he was in the room with me. He was screaming at the top of his lungs lots of profanity," a witness said. "I heard the thundering hooves of everybody running for the door. It was chaos, absolute chaos."

Police have not released the identity of the suspect, nor the name of the officer who shot him. The officer has been placed on routine paid administrative leave.
